On New Years Day, my teenage daughter looked up from her phone and asked me, “Have you seen any of these lists?” She leaned over and showed me a post called “Ins & Outs for 2024.” We read a few of them together. They were great! My favorite things I saw were “OUT: Scrolling” and “IN: Reading.”
I asked her if she had posted a list. She said was thinking about it. So am I.
In a 2022 article published in the Elephant Journal, Nicole Cameron wrote that she gives herself permission to “tiptoe into the new year.” There’s a lot of pressure to reinvent ourselves each year. It’s unnecessary.
I don’t need an overhaul. I adore my friends. I love my family. I enjoy my work. I appreciate my community. I take care of my body, mind, heart, and soul. However, I am always up for an opportunity to reflect on what is working well and what I can improve. There’s no better time than the new year to take stock.
The instagram trend is missing a bucket. In addition to INs and OUTs I think there’s space for KEEPs. Here’s my list.
INs:
Protein
Substack
Podcasting
Embracing AI
Authentically teaching, writing, creating
Listening to the end of people’s sentences before speaking
OUTs:
Buying things that I don’t need
Being late to everything always
Schadenfreude, scarcity, cynicism
Past drama/old stories: who cares?
KEEPs:
Sobriety
Noting joy and gratitude
Resistance training 2x/week
My morning routine: journaling & meditation
Supporting, educating and connecting expecting and postpartum mamas
What are your INs, OUTs and KEEPs for 2024?
